Bookwell Primary School, in Egremont, was placed 18th out of 250 top performing state primary schools in the 2020 edition of ‘Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide’, which is now in its 27th edition. The guide identifies the highest achieving schools in the UK, based on their most recent SATS test results. Scores for reading, GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling) and maths are scaled and averaged.
Average scores of 100 represents the expected standard children should achieve by the end of Year 6. A score of 110 or above in any of the three measures indicates children working at a ‘higher’ level of attainment. Bookwell scored an aggregate score of 339 from their 2018 results, achieving 112 in reading; 111 in maths and 116 in grammar. Headteacher Russell Hardy attributes the excellent ranking and results to the school’s approach to support pupils without putting pressure on them.
Egremont Town Council is extremely proud to support the following groups who were recently presented with a financial donation at their monthly council meeting.
Adrian Cozens from North Lakes Foodbank was presented with a cheque for £3,000 to go towards the cost of providing a Citizen’s Advice worker to attend the Egremont branch of the Foodbank every Tuesday & Friday from 1 – 3pm. This is an invaluable service for residents in need and helps them find assistance in times of crisis.
A cheque for £250 was then presented to Helen Shipton-Smith of Egremont Fair Trade Town Campaign to pay towards the cost of running the micro bus which picks up people from remote areas and brings them to the Farmers Market but time is allowed for them to do their shopping in town so the local businesses also benefit. The Farmers Market is held in Egremont Market Hall every 3rd Friday of the month between 9am – 1pm and it offers a wide range of food, crafts and much more.
Finally, a donation of £50 was presented to Andrew Chestney and Margaret Coiles on behalf of Age UK based in the De Lucy Centre to enable them to create a seating area and more plants in the community garden at the rear of the building and which is available for the public to use. Egremont Town Council held a Community Litter Pick on the morning of Friday 8th November.
As it was such a lovely sunny morning there was a fantastic turn out for the event with volunteers from Bookwell and St. Bridget’s Primary schools, Egremont Youth Partnership, Eg Flood, Home Group as well as Copeland and Town Councillors and as a result in excess of 20 bags of rubbish were collected.

Regarding the flood works drop in session that was due to take place next week- the EA have emailed to say that it is unfortunately now CANCELLED and will be arranged in the near future after the general election- here is the email we received with the reason and a possible future date.-
Unfortunately, due to Purdah, we are having to postpone the drop-in on the 13th November. We have been waiting for confirmation from Defra that we need to postpone it, which we received this morning. Once the election has taken place, we are in the lead-up to Christmas, and we have therefore decided to postpone it until the New Year. We are now looking at a provisional date of the 15th January, and will forward a formal invite nearer the time, once it is confirmed. Can you please put this date in your diaries please?

Monumental Mason completing the refresh of the lettering on Egremont & moor row War Memorials. The railings of both memorials have also undergone repair.
This is to make sure they look their best for remembrance Sunday and into the future.
Egremont Town council have agreement with the Veterans club and will be doing any cleaning etc with joint working to keep the memorials tidy and clean. Can anyone interested in helping preserve the memorials please contact the town council clerk prior to undertaking any cleaning. Thank you.
